First Night

On the Thursday evening after arriving, Sharon (with J) picked me up and we went for a meal at an American style restaurant.  (She knows me well).  It was a blessing to be eased into the country in this way.

Temple of Heaven

After lunch, Xiu accompanied me to the Temple of Heaven (天坛).  I have been fascinated by this since I heard about it, and very excited to actually be there.  What a history!  I don’t know if I am putting too much of positive slant on it, but it certainly seems to me that the Chinese knew there was a God over everything – 上帝 (Shàng dì) – but somehow this got distorted to worshipping creation instead (heaven, fire, earth, water, etc); cf.… Read more...

Lowering of the Flag

This evening Xiu and I went back to Tiananmen Square (天安门广场 ) to watch the flag lowering ceremony.

Angela was able to join us, and I gained a fan – rather randomly a young girl, 万璐 (Wàn Lù), wanted to take a picture with me.  Haha!

Graduation Ceremonies

Today was the big day of two graduation ceremonies for students who have graduated from the University of Surrey in the last ten years or so.  These were the first graduation ceremonies to take place in China and were laid on as part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Having made so many friends at Surrey through volunteering with Friends International in Guildford for the last 16 years or so, I was privileged to be invited as a guest for both ceremonies.… Read more...
